We are attempting to help protect our community, located in the 8th Ward of Des Plaines, Illinois, against the frequent and significant risk of flooding, in an area that is not even located in a flood plain.

Illinois ranks 5th in the United States in terms of losses paid for property damage from convective storms. As such, don't be surprised when you receive your 2009 homeowners bill and find you are now being asked to pay 25-30% more in insurance premium. If you don't flood, congratulations, but insurance actuaries (these are the guys that determine your premium) also consider geographical experience, and not just individual experience, when they set homeowners premium rates. Unfortunately, the City of Des Plaines has historically been responsible for substantial claim payments for flood damage. That is why we are asking for you to take an interest in this matter. We need a better track record!

Those who have experienced flood damage know the helpless feeling and mental anguish that comes when the floodwaters invade their property and their lives. In addition to its sheer destructive force, a flood acts as a thief that steals your time, energy, health, joy, and hope.

A showing of more than 200 very unhappy residents at a meeting organized by Councilman Rosemary Argus on July 28, 2009, was a visible demonstration that the flooding problem, in the 8th Ward, is much more extensive than the City officials may have contemplated. If you know of a flooding problem in your neighborhood, please call Tim Oakley, the City Engineer, at (847) 391-5390 and ask him to come out to discuss your situation. Remember that our government exists to serve us!

The blog is intended to keep you informed of our activities, show our Mayor and City Council members that there is a supporting contingent, and to help them formulate an effective strategy which more broadly addresses the concerns of all Des Plaines residents.

Best Laid Plans

As plans were developed for the storm sewer improvements in the Des Plaines community, the work on Marshall Dr. was scheduled for a June 2 2010 start. However, who would have predicted a strike by road construction laborers to hold up not only storm sewer projects, but also others -- including the casino.

Rains, please stay away. And we will need to utilize the race track and river boats to "invest" our money.
